The students in my literacy class just completed their rhyme books. We are moving on to cinquains, haikus, sonnets and limericks.

The poetry unit has been a learning experience for me. I have always been intimidated by poetry so I would always teach the "easy" poems (cinquains, haiku, etc). But I decided that wasn't fair to my students. When they get to high school, they will be expected to know how to identify the rhyme scheme in a poem and to know the difference between internal rhyme and end rhyme.

So I went back and read through my old poetry anthologies and reeducated myself so I could expose my students to other aspects of poetry. Hopefully, they took something away from the unit.
